                                                                    rd
METHODS: Three C. papaya extract and fractions were prepared: carpaine-enriched
               ammonia-hexane extract (CP-AHE), flavonoids-enriched butanol fraction (CP-BuOH) and
aqueous fraction (CP-Aque). Both CP-BuOH and CP-Aque were fractions enriched from C.
papaya freeze-dried leaf juice extract, a preparation which closely resembles the traditional
extraction method. The level of inflammatory cytokines in treated RAW 264.7 macrophage
                                                                       TM
               and toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) activation in HEK-Blue hTLR4 (TLR4-transfected human
embryonic kidney) cells were quantified to verify its anti-inflammatory effects.
RESULTS: All extract and fractions significantly inhibit LPS-induced secretion of pro-
inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1β and IL-6) in RAW 264.7 cells as compared to
                                                                           TM
control. Similarly, the LPS-induced TLR4 activation in HEK-Blue hTLR4 cells were significantly
               inhibited by CP-AHE (IC50TLR4=59.27±4.2 µg/mL), CP-BuOH (IC50TLR4=44.83±3.1 µg/mL) and CP-
Aque (IC50TLR4=>100 µg/mL) as compared to control.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: The results provide evidence that C. papaya leaf juice extract
exerts anti-inflammatory effects, indicating that the plant extract has therapeutic potential
for the treatment of various inflammatory conditions and diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Health literacy empowers individual to use health information effectively.
Adequate health literacy often results in better health decision-making. The aim of this study
is to determine the relationship between OH literacy (OHL) with perceived dental need and
barriers among patients attending government dental clinics in Seremban.
METHODS: A self-validated questionnaire using OHLI-M was distributed. Information about
patients’ sociodemographic profile, OHL, self-perceived dental treatment needs and barriers
to OH service were collected. Self-perceived dental treatment need was based on dental
problems reported by the participants. Three domains on dental barriers were assessed
including individual factors, dental fear and quality of service. The relationship was tested
               using Spearman Correlation in SPSS.
RESULTS: Out of 199 participants,82.4% were Malays, female (66.3%) and obtained tertiary
education (58.3%). More than half (63.8%) has adequate level of OHL. Majority (82.4%)
perceived at least one dental problem. More than 40% perceived that they have toothache
(40.7%), dental caries (49.2%) and bad breath (40.7%). All participants reported at least six
barriers towards the oral health service. OHL was found to be significantly correlated with
perceived dental treatment need (p<0.05) and barriers related to quality of OH service
               (p<0.05).
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Patients with higher OHL perceived higher dental treatment
need that led them to appropriate disease management. Similarly, those with higher literacy
had more exposure to the service delivery, hence possessed the ability to inform what is
needed to augment the quality of service.
