Ensuring adequate blood stock levels is essential to prevent treatment delays and ensurepatient safety. Our aim is to enhance the success of blood donation drives to >70% by identifyingcontributing factors, formulate strategies, implement remedial actions, and assess their effectiveness.KEY MEASURES FOR IMPROVEMENT:We aim for over 70% success in blood donation drives, following our department%u2019s consensus.PROCESS OF GATHERING INFORMATION:A quality improvement study was conducted from January to October 2022 using convenience samplingmethod, comprising two phases: pre-remedial (July-August 2022, npre=66) and post-remedial(September-October 2022, npost=56). Data was collected using the Blood Bank Information Systemversion 2.0 and checkbox questionnaires, then analysed in Microsoft Excel. Team members, including theHead of Department and team leader, discussed the data to develop improvement strategies.ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION:Various factors contributed to unsuccessful drives including long waiting times (40%), low bed/bleeder todonor ratio (50%), ineffective post-mortem (70%), and delayed release of drive information (40%).STRATEGIES FOR CHANGE:The remedial actions to counteract the aforementioned factors was executed by introducing a newlyestablished Runner System, successfully implemented through comprehensive training, and briefing tobleeders, prior to the drive session. Next, enforcement of 100% site visits for new organisers/venues andconducting guided post-mortems with specialist supervision. Finally, we established systematic resourcesallocation and timely release of drive information using real-time Google Spreadsheet.EFFECT OF CHANGE:The successful drive rate increased from 55% to 64%, with Achievable Benefit Not Achieved (ABNA)decreasing from 15% to 6%. These strategies potentially ensured a sustainable blood supply, bettercost-effectiveness, increased sponsor and donor interest, and guaranteed blood quality.THE NEXT STEP:Future plans include studying the cost-effectiveness of donation drives, expanding interventions to otherhospitals, ongoing monitoring of remedial actions, and enhancing networking with organisers.160 | Page
