This present study aims to increase the percentage of contraceptive uptake bypatients in pre-pregnancy care service in Klinik Kesihatan Sungai Besi.METHODOLOGY:Using a cross-sectional study, all eligible women who attended the PPC clinics were identified betweenJanuary and September 2021. Participants were selected among married women of the reproductive agegroup between 19 and 49 years who have been diagnosed as having at least one chronic medical conditionincluding diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, connective tissue diseases etc. A medical audit was doneto analyse contributing factors that hinder patients from practising contraception.RESULTS:From the data obtained, strategies were formulated and remedial actions were taken to overcome thebarriers. Among actions taken is strengthening the PPC clinic by organising regular CME on healthpromotion and contraception to staff and patients. Those who were not on contraceptives were givenearly referral to counsellor and FMS besides being closely followed up by the team. Post interventions, this study revealed a significant increase in the uptake of contraceptives in the PPC clinic from 21.4% to72.8 %. Data analysis also demonstrated slight reduction in the contributing factors which preventedpatients from practicing contraception including reduction in 4% for desire for more children, 7 % forpartner disapproval and 5% for fear of side-effects.DISCUSSION:The result showed improvement in the uptake of contraceptives among PPC patients with the remedialactions taken. Ongoing efforts need to be enforced to ensure high contraceptive uptakes which includecontinuous medical education monitored by a designated team. These improvements will be shared withother clinics in our district.159 | Page
