been using the same questionnaire such as the SF36 to
measure the quality of life, then it is preferable to validate
the same questionnaire SF36 as compared to developing a
completely new questionnaire to achieve the same
purpose.
Therefore, the decision to validate an existing
questionnaire rather than develop a completely new one
that measures the same latent variable is ultimately based
on the fact that the original version of an existing
questionnaire (i) has a sufficiently high level of both
reliability and validity, (ii) has been widely used in
research, and (iii) has been found to be relevant for the
current application or to suit the specific requirements of
the study objective(s). Otherwise, the development of a
completely new questionnaire may prove to be a more
viable option.
