INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of mental health problems among adolescents detained in
rehabilitation and correctional centres globally cannot be overstated. Research reported a
higher prevalence of mental health disorders among this population as compared to
adolescents in the general population, including in Malaysia. The purpose of this study was
to determine the effectiveness of the Super Skills for Life (SSL) Program, to promote mental
wellbeing among detained adolescents within the Malaysian welfare-institution system.
METHODS: The study employed a quasi-experimental study design consisting a total of 80
female participants from both the interventional and control arm. The SSL programme, a
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based intervention was delivered over a period of four
weeks in each interventional study site. All participants were recruited from three randomly
selected welfare institutions in different states across Peninsular Malaysia. Participants were
administered pre-test measures on various domains of psychological wellbeing, namely
general mental wellbeing, resilience, coping strategies, and self-esteem.
RESULTS: The baseline cross sectional study of the participants mental health parameters of
interest revealed that more than 50 per cent of the total sample population were
experiencing mental health problems. Analysis of the mean difference using T-test of the pre
and post tests in the intervention group revealed a significant enhancement in their general
mental wellbeing and other indicators of mental health, as well as a reduction in depressive
               symptoms, anxiety and stress.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Based on its ease of administration and proven mental wellbeing
promotive functions, the author recommends its integration into legacy rehabilitation
programmes within adolescent detention institutions nationwide.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence shows that individuals who have normal BMI with central obesity
carry more health risks associated with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) compared with
total obesity. Currently, there is lack of studies on prevalence of Malaysians that have normal
BMI with central obesity. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of adults of
normal BMI with central obesity and its risk factors among Malaysians.
