DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Attaining all treatment targets in type 2 diabetes patients is
challenging, especially among younger adults and non-Chinese ethnic groups. A more
targeted intervention should be directed at these high-risk populations.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM) are diseases that are very
prevalent worldwide. This study aims to estimate the prevalence and associated factors of
hypertension among adults with diabetes in Malaysia.
METHODS: A sub-analysis was performed using the National Health and Morbidity Survey
2019 data, involving 2,629 respondents aged ≥ 18 years. Diabetes and hypertension were
defined as, i) self-reported, or ii) using diagnostic criteria (fasting capillary blood glucose of ≥
11.1mmol/L or average systolic and diastolic blood pressure of ≥ 140 and ≥90, for diabetes
and hypertension respectively). Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to
identify factors related to hypertension among diabetes respondents.
RESULTS: Prevalence of hypertension among adult respondents with diabetes was 59.0%
(95% CI:55.7,62.2. Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that gender, age group,
ethnic group, marital status, occupational status, obesity, and cholesterol were associated
with hypertension among respondents with diabetes.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: This study showed a high prevalence of hypertension among
patients with diabetes. Individuals with diabetes should have their blood pressure regularly
monitored to prevent complications.
