10 IMR ANNUAL REPORT 2021
Malaysian Stem Cell Registry (MSCR)
The Malaysian Stem Cell Registry (MSCR) was founded in 2000 as a collaboration
project between the Ministry of Health Malaysia, through IMR, and the National
ALLERGY AND IMMUNOLOGY RESEARCH CENTRE (AIRC) stem cell donors in Malaysia. The establishment of MSCR aims to facilitate the
Cancer Council Malaysia (MAKNA). It serves as the main directory for all registered
search for compatible stem cell donors for patients with haematological disorders.
The objectives of the registry are to identify, collect data and perform searches for
suitable potential donors for patients with blood disorders in Malaysia.
In 2021, two on-site campaigns were conducted in the country. The reduced
number of campaigns was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, walk-in
donors continued to be recruited throughout the year. In 2021, MSCR received
171 search requests and 136 registered donors. MSCR facilitated three Peripheral
Blood Stem Cell transplants. To date, there are 34,379 registered stem cell donors
and 21 compatible blood stem cell transplantations have successfully been carried
out among patients with leukaemia in Malaysia.
