This study aims to reduce the percentage of patients developing active caries within sixmonths after comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia.KEY MEASURES FOR IMPROVEMENT:The key indicator for improvement was measured using the percentage of patients developing activecaries within six months after comprehensive dental treatment under general anaesthesia with a standardof %u226410%, following the National Paediatric Dentistry Key Performance Indicator.PROCESS OF GATHERING INFORMATION:A quality improvement study involving a verification study and three post-interventional cycles using auniversal sampling method were conducted. A clinical audit of dental records and a focus groupdiscussion were done to determine the contributing factors. Number of patients who develop active carieswithin six months post-operatively was collected and recorded in a data collection form.ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION:The contributing factors identified were incomplete peri-operative dental charting (100%), poorcompliance to oral habit post-operatively (36.7%) non-compliance to post-operative appointments(17.4%), failure of restorations (1.5%) and the lack of standardised caries risk assessment post-operatively(100%). 14.1% of patients developed new caries and the ABNA was 4.1%.STRATEGIES FOR CHANGE:The strategies implemented were introducing a new caries risk assessment form adapted from CAMBRA2021 during post-operative appointments, improving peri-operative documentation, optimisingpost-operative preventive and restorative measures, and reminders to parents for recall appointments toreduce defaulters.EFFECT OF CHANGE:The percentage of patients developing active caries within six months after comprehensive dentaltreatment under general anaesthesia reduces from 14.1% to 3.85% in Cycle 1, 3.57% in Cycle 2 and 0%in Cycle 3.THE NEXT STEP:Remedial measures have been shown to reduce the percentage of new caries and improve patienttreatment. An audit will be carried out periodically to ensure the sustainability of the department%u2019s result.44 | Page
