Verification study (2019) revealed 60.4% of primary schoolchildren in Kulai weregingivitis-free. Preventing periodontal diseases in primary schoolchildren is crucial for lifelong oral healthand improved quality of life.KEY MEASURES FOR IMPROVEMENT:The key indicator for improvement was gauged using percentage of gingivitis-free mouth among primaryschoolchildren. Standard was set at %u226573% based on the Plan of Action Oral Health Program Ministry ofHealth Malaysia.PROCESS OF GATHERING INFORMATION:A quality improvement study in 2019 utilised questionnaires for data collection, involving 134 primaryschoolchildren and 32 healthcare workers to identify issues and contributing factors. All primaryschoolchildren were included, with those who refused during the study were excluded. The HealthInformation Data system was utilised to gather indicator data.ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION:The contributing factors included time limitation for small group oral hygiene instruction (90%), poor oralhygiene practices (80%), lack of oral hygiene awareness (75%), ineffective oral hygiene education (60%),inadequate training in periodontal screening for operators (50%) and insufficient training on Gi-Ret system(40%).STRATEGIES FOR CHANGE:Intervention measures include forming a Dental Dedicated Team (DDT) to convey personalised toothbrushing demonstrations and education, and creating dental health education corners in primary schoolsthrough collaboration with teachers. More strategies were established in Cycle 2 including empoweringprimary schoolchildren via Ikon Gigi Junior (IGG-J) and collaborating with private dental practitioners.EFFECT OF CHANGE:The percentage of primary schoolchildren with gingivitis-free mouths increased from 60.4% (2019) to 62.3%(2022) and 73.75% (2023). The ABNA reduced from 12.6% (2019) to 10.7% (2022) and -0.75% (2023).THE NEXT STEP:The strategies will be expanded and replicated to all districts in Johor.
