Primary dental clinics in Hulu Langat District reported 14 NSI from 2019 to 2023 (POA,2024).Therefore, this study aims to reduce the incidence of needlestick injury in Hulu Langat district.KEY MEASURES FOR IMPROVEMENT:Number of NSI among dental personnel in Hulu Langat district serves as the key indicator with a target ofzero cases based on standard in Plan of Action (POA), Selangor.PROCESS OF GATHERING INFORMATION:A cross-sectional study was conducted using convenience sampling across 11 dental clinics in HuluLangat district in April 2024 to identify contributing factors to NSI. A self-administered questionnairewas distributed via Google Forms to 202 dental personnel, excluding administrative staff and drivers. Thecollected data were compiled in Excel and analysed using percentages and frequency tables.ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION:Pre-interventional study conducted in 2023 revealed three cases of NSI. A survey was conducted and atotal of 202 (80%) out of 250 dental personnel responded. 40.1% respondents recapped needles beforedisposal but were unaware of the correct disposal procedures, and 11.4% did not use the recommendedone-handed technique for recapping needles. All 11 dental clinics were found to be lacking in effectivesmart needle removal practices.STRATEGIES FOR CHANGE:The strategies include modified training consisting of CDE with pretest and posttest, OSCE and hands-onpractice sessions. Additional smart needle removal provided to each clinic. Furthermore, comprehensiveclinical monitoring was conducted at intervals of 1,3,6 months to track progress and ensure sustainedadherence.EFFECT OF CHANGE:Over a 6-month period, spanning from September 2023 to March 2024, the number of NSI casesdecreased from three to zero, successfully achieving the targeted goal of zero NSI incidents for the year.THE NEXT STEP:The project will expand to include all staff in Hulu Langat district, with current participation averagingaround 25 individuals per group. We plan to expand this project to state and national level.184 | Page
