These issues may subsequently cause increasedmorbidity, mortality, and hospitalisation costs. The pre-remedial study in July 2019 showed that 0% ofmedications were correctly administered via NGT. This study aimed to increase the percentage of correctmedication administration via NGT in Kajang Hospital.KEY MEASURES FOR IMPROVEMENT:The indicator was the percentage of correct medication administration via NGT, aiming for a standard of100%.PROCESS OF GATHERING INFORMATION:A quality improvement study was conducted using universal sampling from July 2019 until August 2020.Data was collected using an observational audit form for 210 samples. A questionnaire was distributed to158 healthcare professionals (HCPs) to assess their knowledge and identify the contributing factors.ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION:The pre-remedial study showed none (0%) of the medication via NGT administered correctly which notfulfilled all the criteria in prescribing, screening, supplying and administrating of the medication via NGTcorrectly. The contributing factors identified were unavailability of appropriate equipment, lack ofStandard Operational Procedure (SOP), absence of local guidelines, and a lack of awareness. The meanknowledge score among HCPs was 46.9%.STRATEGIES FOR CHANGE:The NasoCare Integrated Programme was implemented by developing strategies such as the NasoMedguidelines with a QR code, an M&M kit containing innovative medication crushing equipment, SOPs onmedication administration techniques, a PinkCard to tag NGT patients, daily lists of NGT patients forinpatient pharmacists and, customised courses.EFFECT OF CHANGE:Correct medication administration via NGT increased from 0% to 92.3% after two cycles. AchievableBenefit Not Achieved (ABNA) reduced from 100% to 7.7% after two cycles. The mean knowledge scoreamong HCPs increased to 82.3%.THE NEXT STEP:This study will be expanded to all wards in Kajang Hospital and shared with other healthcare facilities inMalaysia. A reference guide will be developed to educate caretakers on NGT medication administration athome.183 | Page
