However, many students donot publish their work. The aim of this project is to improve the quality of research and empower thestudents to produce high-quality research outputs, thereby increasing the number of publications.METHODOLOGY:An audit of the research conducted by past students in the Department of Family Medicine over the lastfive years was done. The main factors contributing to the low publication rate were identified aspoor-quality studies and inadequate experience in writing manuscripts for publication. For this exercise, the June/November 2020 batch and the December 2021 batch were included. The interventionsimplemented include variations in the types of study designs offered to candidates, introduction ofresearch development sessions consisting of small group discussions and webinars, and manuscriptwriting classes.RESULTS:Results showed more variations in the types of study conducted, with 19 out of 40 students having chosento do Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (SRMA) and seven having conducted qualitative studies, achieving the >20% target for non-quantitative studies. There was also improvement in the quality ofresearch implementation, with three candidates publishing their work in Q1 and Q2 journals. The numberof manuscript-like write-ups had increased with 16 students having submitted in manuscript-like formatwhile only three submitted in the conventional format.DISCUSSION:There was marked improvement in the types of research chosen, with students and supervisors beingmore confident in choosing non-conventional studies. SRMA, with its shorter study period, enabledearlier publication and a higher chance of acceptance in Q1 or Q2 journals compared to primary orquantitative studies. Manuscript writing classes boosted students%u2019 confidence in producingmanuscript-like outputs. However, this strategy requires dedicated research personnel.173 | Page
