Figure 5.1 Flow chart of the selection procedure

The search yielded 8,626 articles, of which 6,866 were from database search and 1,760
were identified from other sources including grey literature. Figure 5.1 shows a total of
2,214 records that remained after 6,412 records were found to be duplicates and were
removed. The remaining 2,214 records were screened and further 2,059 records were
excluded. A total of 155 were assessed for eligibility and 17 records were excluded with
reasons that the participants in those studies were not adolescents and the content was
not available online. Finally, a total of 138 articles met the inclusion criteria and were
eligible for charting and extracting the data. Findings were presented in four key domains,
namely trends and outcomes, factors associated with SRH, knowledge and attitudes
related to SRH, and intervention strategies for SRH. All the included studies were carried
            out between 2004 and 2018.

In terms of study design, the 138 articles included: cross-sectional (39), qualitative (13),
            review (7), mixed-method (4), retrospective data analysis (2), population survey (12),
            Malaysian youth index (1), quasi-experimental (2), online survey (1), case study (1),
longitudinal study (1), and unpublished thesis (55), respectively. Overall, the studies were
distributed nationwide, whereby the highest number of studies was carried out in
            Peninsular Malaysia.

This review also found materials categorised as grey literatures such as adolescent’s
SRH related report, training modules and health education materials which were
produced by Federation of Reproductive Health Associations, Malaysia (FRHAM), Asian-
Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women (ARROW), United Nations Children's
Fund (UNICEF) and WHO. In addition, at least nineteen unpublished adolescent’s SRH
related studies conducted in juvenile rehabilitation centre nationwide were also extracted
from Department of Social Welfare’s Research Repository website.
