4. Techniques to Improve the Subject Matter
Knowledge During a Consultation Process
A common practice for a biostatistician to adopt prior to offering a consultation is to garner
a preliminary but adequate level of understanding of the subject matter of the new study
by first clarifying with the research client regarding the terminology(ies) used in the study,
the differing states of disease presentation, the various treatment modalities offered and
the expected treatment outcomes. In this section, the author is going to share some tools
that can be applied by a biostatistician during the consultation process to elicit a basic
understanding of the disease presentation, treatment options and expected outcomes.
