3. Research Consultation Begins with an Initial
Evaluation of the Research Study: Three Essential
Questions
The first step for a biostatistician to take prior to providing research consultation is to gain
an initial understanding of the subject matter and also to understand the proposed scope of
a research study. This is the most crucial step that will determine the selection of an
appropriate research design together with the development of a sound research
methodology that will subsequently determine the success of the research itself (which
shall depend on whether both the research design and research methodology are able to
address all the research objectives). The recommended approach for a biostatistician to
handle this is by posing some very relevant questions to the research clients. Below is a list
