NUTRITION, METABOLISM
& CARDIOVASCULAR
RESEARCH CENTRE (NMCRC)
The Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Research Centre (NMCRC)
comprises four units. These are the Nutrition Unit, Endocrine and Metabolic Unit,
Inborn Errors of Metabolism and Genetic Unit and the Cardiovascular Unit. Each
unit carries out various research activities and also specialises within specific
national priority areas. Together, NMCRC conducts and excels in various research-
related areas and expertise as highlighted below.
NUTRITION, METABOLISM & CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH CENTRE (NMCRC) Objectives
Research in nutritional biochemistry, analytical food chemistry and
nutrigenomics based on national priority areas
Pre-clinical research in endocrinology and diet-related diseases especially
in diabetes and cardiovascular health
Research, training and consultation for inborn errors of metabolism and
genetic disorders
Serves as a national reference laboratory for iodine assays in urine and
participation in an iodine-deficiency eradication programme
Providing consultative and advisory services to the Ministry of Health and
other government agencies, particularly on matters related to Malaysian food
laws and regulations, national and international Codex issues, food safety
and food analyses, national dietary guidelines and recommended dietary
allowances (RDAs), food poverty line, palm oil nutrition, food composition
database and various aspects of food safety
