Services provided by Medical Entomology Unit in 2020
Malaria and Filaria
Every year, mosquito samples from malaria/filaria endemic areas are sent to IDRC from the State
Health Department. A total of 46 Molecular PCR tests were conducted for detection of malaria
parasite and filarial worm in mosquitoes in 2020. No filaria outbreak was reported. There was a
reduction of number of mosquito samples received in 2020, during the pandemic, as compared to
a total of 2008 samples received in the previous year.
Forensic Entomology
Diagnostic service for forensic entomology in estimating the minimum post-mortem interval
(mPMI) for crime investigations and also identification of insects is also carried out. The procedures
consist of mounting for larvae, colonisation from larvae until adult and molecular detection for
species confirmation. In 2020, the unit received 92 cases of forensic entomology and two cases of
myiasis. In comparison, the unit received 127 forensic entomology cases in 2019.
