3.4 Drug Use
Introduction
Globally, it is estimated that in 2010 between 153 million and 300 million people aged 15-64 (3.4-6.6
per cent of the world’s population in that age group) had used an illicit substance at least once in the
previous year.With estimated annual prevalence of cannabis use in 2010 ranging from 2.6 to 5 per cent
of the adult population (between 119 million and 224 million estimated users aged 15-64), cannabis
remains the world’s most widely used illicit substance. In terms of prevalence, amphetamine-type
stimulants (ATS) (excluding“ecstasy”) remain second only to cannabis,with an estimated prevalence
of 0.3-1.2 per cent in 2010 (between 14.3 million and 52.5 million users) (41).
Findings
Generally, 98.2% (95% CI: 96.70-99.00) of the students reported that they never use drug during their
lifetime (Table 4.1.1).
