“The Building Blocks of Leadership”

The TGP Inspirational Leadership Symposium 2019 was the first of its kind, a premier
leadership meeting for healthcare professionals from various divisions in the Ministry
of Health Malaysia (MOH). This inaugural symposium was an innovation from the TGP
Inspirational Leadership Podium Series held in previous years by Institute for Health
Management (IHM). It was successfully organised by TGP Secretariat and Talents of
Cohort 8 on the 3rd and 4th July 2019 at the new National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Complex, Setia Alam, Selangor. It served as a platform for 350 delegates from various
healthcare professionals in MOH to gather and gain knowledge from the experience-
sharing of eminent leadership figures from other industries in Malaysia.

The theme for this year’s symposium was “The Building Blocks of Leadership”. It
resonates with the global call for stronger leadership in the healthcare sector. A
key learning objective of the symposium was to empower healthcare professionals
in developing the leadership skill of being responsive rather than reactive to global
changes. This year, the keynote was delivered by the Director General of Health which
emphasised on the challenges in the healthcare sector and the need to ensure that high
quality, safe, and compassionate care is provided to our people in these changing times.

The symposium was proud to have two prominent speakers to deliver their inspirational
plenary talk. They were Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO, the Founder and
Chairman of Sunway Group with the talk titled “Leadership: The Sunway Story” and
Datuk Prof Dr Che Muhaya Haji Muhamad with a talk titled “Leading with Compassion”.
The delegates were also privileged to hear the achievement and findings on the TGP
Projects during the knowledge sharing session by six TGP alumni. This symposium also
aimed to provide a platform for mentorship and networking opportunities for MOH
delegates from all over the country. Thus, it was an opportunity to empower MOH
delegates to improve their leadership capacity and competence to achieve the best
of their potential for the nation.
