The WHO Expert Committee on zoonoses at its third meeting in 1966 defined zoonoses as those infections which are naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and man. However in 1969, Schwabe came up with a more apt definition of zoonoses as "those infections and infestations which are shared in nature by man and lower vertebrate animals".
